With all of the writing that is out there on the internet today, it can be difficult to find some of the tools that you might need to become a marketable and reputable fiction writer. There is so much writing that is key word dense but lacking in style, content and substance. Gone are the days of dime store novels and drop in the bucket romances. Today, the writing world is fast paced and ever changing and requires much attention to detail as well as a capacity for creative and imaginative content.

Fiction Writing with the Reader in mind

SO HOW DO I WRITE GREAT FICTION?

There are a number of ways to create and offer superior fiction. If you want to write your own great fiction, some of these tips might help you formulate and execute your writing cleanly, succinctly and with great imaginative hooks to engage and sustain the reader.

· Engage the reader almost immediately.

There are a number of fiction stories that spend too much time on a grand introduction rather than focusing on characters and plot, which can often feel too wordy or lacking in any immediate sense of engagement. Whenever possible, take care to setup the main characters as well as the plot within the first chapter. A reader’s level of engagement is usually hinged on that opening chapter. Don’t waste it writing about unimportant details. Get right to the meat of it and throw in the hook as soon as you can.

· Show emotion. Don’t make the reader guess.

This is one of the most overlooked tips. Often, in the quest for straightforward and engaging fiction, a writer has a tendency to simply state the obvious, leaving no space for the reader to really see and feel the character’s emotion. For example, instead of writing, “John was angry”, write something like, “John’s mouth twisted and turned and he raised his clenched fists into the air, cursing the sky with his rage”. Rather than simply stating the obvious, take the time to illustrate the emotion so that the reader wants to keep reading.

· Outline your plot to find inspiration.

Some writers can just sit down and write a beautiful piece of fiction. But most of us need time to properly map out and execute the text so that it will be a solid and engaging piece of fiction writing. Some writers rely on research. Some will utilize different outlining techniques such as cubing, mapping, cluster writing or webs to organize their ideas. Whatever you choose to do, find the technique that works for you.

· Write in sessions and stages.

As they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Never think that you will sit down and write everything you need in one sitting. Pace yourself and set realistic goals. One chapter a day, perhaps. One three paragraphs per day. If you are writing flash fiction, start in the middle and work your way through, piece by piece. Step away from your writing from time to time. Take breaks so that your brain can regroup and reassess. Sometimes words change their meanings as we write them or formulate them into text. Don’t overdo it. Savor your words so that others, in turn, will devour them.
